Experience Old-Fashioned Theatrics by the Rural Academy Theater

Unplug for a FREE evening with the Rural Academy Theater gypsies, and experience a world untainted by modern technology. The performers will arrive on the front lawn of the Captain White House October 21st, and the performance will be held Thursday, October 22 at 7 p.m. The performance is presented by Alamance Arts and B.Town Events with funding from Farm Bureau Alamance, Farm Services and Plum Pucci Salon.

We have the world of entertainment at our fingertips, but the best kind of show doesn’t come from a computer or a flat screen. It comes from a wagon!

The Rural Academy Theater strives to recreate this attitude of carefree entertainment with their horse-drawn carriage and band of performers, who traverse the state on foot. From the Appalachians to the coast, locals experience soft lantern light on a chilly autumn evening, tucked on blankets and huddled together as a simpler time unfolds.

The performance opens with a modern skewing of the Persephone myth, while following the conversation of a small band of dinner guests joined for an annual meal. The show explores our ties to agrarian rhythms as well as our modern disassociation from them. The stories recounted by the dinner guests spring to life through shadow puppetry, song and physical theater, acknowledging the extent to which our lives and fate are still beating to a seasonal, collective pulse.

The feature presentation will be followed by a screening of Buster Keaton’s 1922 silent film “Cops” accompanied live by The Rural Academy Orchestra.
